Photography: Focusing

Focusing is the most important aspect of photography, but unfortunately much neglected one too. If you want sharp pictures, you need to focus well and eliminate the camera shake. Camera shake can be eliminated by using higher shutter speeds or tripods for stationery objects. You have to use different techniques for different types of subjects for better focus. But in some occasions you also induce the out of focus area in your pictures intentionally.

For Closeups, focus is the key, focus the nearest eye to the camera.

For such shots you would choose a wide open apertures to that background separation is achieved.

Here I wanted a intentional blur to show the motion of people in busy street. Slower shutter speed was used.

To catch such actions, you have to use some kind of focus tracking(or manual focus) and use the burst mode. High shutter speed also required to freeze the motion.

Panning shots, you move your camera while clicking the shot following the subject, this will blur the background, giving the motion effect to your picture.

Focus is the most important element in photography. I do struggle with focus but it’s getting better with practice. My favourite from this serie is the first picture with the focused eye

Thanks for the feedback.. yes foucusing is very tricky thing. Since we depend more on auto focus and sometimes auto focus does wrong focusing… One has to be very careful when doing close up photography… as margin for error is very less..

Thank you, if you have a camera on which you can control the aperture you can do it easily… if you have zoom/tele lens then also you can get the blurred background by zooming maximum and shooting but you have to have background furthest… HTH..
