Sringeri, a place of “Vedanta”

#Sringeri, also known as #Shringeri is located in Chikkamagaluru district in the South Indian state of #Karnataka in India. It is the site of the first maṭha (Sringeri Sharada Peeta) established by Adi Shankara, Hindu theologian and exponent of the Advaita Vedanta philosophy, in the 8th century CE It is located on the banks of the river Tungā. Temple is built in 1338 A.D.



According to legend, Adi Shankaracharya settled here with his followers, reason being he supposed have seen a cobra sheltering frog in a hot sun. Realizing that place to be place of peace where everything lived together he decided to stay here for long time. Adi Shankaracharya also established other mathas in the Jyotirmath, Puri and Dwaraka.


You can reach from cities like Bangalore (7 hrs by car),  Mysore (6 hrs by car) and Mangalore (4 hrs by car), although expect a windy roads and surprise rains anytime as its in the heart of western ghats. Very scenic view to travel and you will have lots of photography opportunities during your final leg of your travel in. Avoid travelling during night times as there will be limited assistance on the road after 7PM.

Try to say minimum a full day to really appreciate the beauty of this place in different time and different light conditions. Early morning visit to the temple is recommended and make sure to have your camera ready!

Please note not to carry too much jewelry and expensive items as place is very small town, also take all health requirements checked. Checked the weather and take clothing accordingly. Footwear is not allowed inside the temple complex so be ready for barefoot walk for long time. There are no high class hotels to stay and be ready for bit of inconvenience but hotels are there, you need to check and accept them. No non veg or alcoholic drinks allowed into the city so follow the rules of the city.

If you have another two extra days then head over to Chickmagalur and visit Belur, Halebeed and Bababudden Giri hills.
